For the Life of the World

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who preach the good news!
— The Prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 52:7)

Prolific California-based artist Wayne Forte is an active member of CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts). His paintings on Bible themes contain a number of depictions of feet: from the Word which is a lamp unto the feet, to Mary Magdalene’s anointing of Jesus’s feet, to (as here) Jesus washing his disciples feet. This particular painting, titled Not only my feet, centers the bare foot in a way that makes it a palpable part of a sacramental action with universal intent. How beautiful, indeed, are the feet …

As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.

— Jesus Christ, the Son of God (John 20:21)

The Penultimate Sunday of Epiphany

Texts for this Week

Prayer

Almighty God, through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you revealed the way of eternal life to every race and nation: Pour out this gift anew, that by the preaching of the Gospel your salvation may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Christ’s is the Seed

UK-based vocal trio composed of three clerics — eponymously, “The Priests” — sing the Celtic hymn of obscure origins: Ag Criost an Siol.

Christ's is the seed, Christ's is the crop,
in the rickyard of God may we be brought.
Christ's is the sea, Christ's is the fish,
in the nets of God may we be caught.

From growth to age, from age to death,
Thy two arms, O Christ, about us.
From death to end, not end but rebirth,
in blessed Paradise may we be.
